I’m a web & software developer. I used to claim to be more of a designer, but over time I’ve realized that I truly prefer to work on features and functionality more than the design itself. I like making things work. I like building entire products from the ground up, which is what I’m doing with ArrivalApp. I’m a dreamer, a thinker, and a creator. I know and appreciate good design and usability when I see it. Still, I’ve acknowledged that when it comes down to what I have a passion for, development comes first, so that’s what I devote my time to.
I’ve been wanting to get rid of my one page personal website in favor of a blog-style site for a while. I’m not a regular writer by any means, but lately I’ve found myself wishing I had a place to share thoughts, reviews and possibly even tutorials from time to time. I learn so much from others who take the time to share their knowledge online, so having an online space of my own will allow me to give back as well, and who knows, maybe I’ll get to help a few people in the process.
For the site redesign, I knew I wanted to use a CMS, so naturally I chose WordPress. I’ve designed custom WordPress themes in the past, but truthfully, I haven’t had the time or desire to tackle this redesign myself. When I need a pre-built WordPress theme, one of the first places I look is Okay Themes. Mike McAlister is one of the best WordPress theme developers I know. Not only are his designs clean and original, but his attention to detail, even at the code level, is top notch. Add to that the detailed theme documentation and theme updates, and it’s obvious why I think so highly of Okay Themes.
Coincidentally, around the time I was working on my first post for the new site, Mike released Ampersand, a beautiful new WordPress theme, and ran a promotion on Twitter for a chance to win a copy of the theme and a super sweet t-shirt.
Retweet my last tweet about Ampersand for a chance to grab a free theme and one of these awesome shirts. I’ll pick 2! cl.ly/RZ3R

I RT’d it, and as it turns out, won an awesome shirt and a copy of Ampersand. Well, how perfect is that? I got some cool swag and a perfect theme to redesign my site with. Thanks Mike!
As a web professional, it feels a little like cheating to not design my own site, but at the end of the day, my site looks way better using this super clean theme than it would have if I had tried to take the time to design a theme myself. Quite frankly, it probably wouldn’t have happened soon, if at all, because I just haven’t had the time.
If you like the new design, take a minute to give props to @mikemcalister on Twitter, and check out Ampersand and all the other themes that Okay Themes has to offer.
